MY CS ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

Excellency the President, Excellency the Deputy President, ladies and gentlemen good evening. I convey my gratitude and that of my family to his Excellency the President for this appointment and opportunity to serve as Secretary of Defence.

Fifteen years ago, our defence forces took up a task to safeguard our country in line with its mission to defend our sovereignty. Our disciplined forces pursued an enemy that had a distorted identity but manifested itself in the basic fabric of our society.

You fought with determination and pride for our republic. Those moments still hold a special place in our hearts and in the narratives I have encountered before as a researcher with the heroes who fought along our regional colleagues in Somalia.  Over the years we lost patriotic men and women but the goal of a secure Kenya was achieved.
Your Excellency you have tasked me with the leadership of one of the world’s most recognized forces. A military that has reinvented itself and aligning its focus with global trends. Our capacity has increased by quantity and quality, our technology is unmatched, our spirit and will unrivalled. The professionalism, precision and readiness of our forces has helped project our interests and that of the international community in seeking a stable and peaceful region and the world over.

Your Excellency, I will do this with the necessary skill and acumen. I am looking forward to engaging with the respective agencies within the ministry to better our standards. We will move ahead to improve on our disaster preparedness and response capabilities, rolling out in phases improvised conflict early warning systems and current renaissance structures that keep us ahead of the rest. Transparency, integrity with passion will help realize this. Changes are part of progress. That is what our nation is known for.

To our Kenya Defence Forces, I have vivid memories of your battles. I will reach out to our veterans who need the government’s support physically, financially and most important emotionally. Your scars in battle will be our stars to the love, peace and unity that we endeavour.  You have done great service to this nation and this nation shall do great service to you. I will also seek your wisdom and hold in high regard your input and guidance. To those in the service, “Every soldier has the baton of a field marshal in his knapsack” These are the words of Napoleon Bonaparte. Potential is better exploited in service. You are our fore. If we fly to the moon someday in the near future, you will pull a first. I will leave the comfort of my bed and the company of my family to visit the outposts and bases. We will do it together.  To the young men and women who aspire to join the disciplined forces, the vision of being a premier, credible and mission capable force deeply rooted in professionalism awaits your zeal.

Your Excellency, as the oath expects of me that will be my rule to your office and to this beautiful nation. The best is yet to come. For the service in land, sea and air salute.
God bless our forces, God Bless Kenya.
